SANCTUS TO PETRUS

Inspired by the frescos in the Crypt of Original Sin in Matera, the "Painter of The Flowers of Matera" has narrated scenes from the Old and New Testament in a cycle of frescoes dating back to the 9th century. A. D.. of the rupestrian wall painting. This dreamscape grove of citrus trees includes a clementine tree which relates to Sanctus to Petrus, one of the scenes illuminated in the crypt. Petrus (St. Peter)'s remains are said to now lie in the Clementine Chapel in Rome and the name Peter means 'rock'. The trees here are rooted to the palest rocky outcrop.
